What to expect at a well-child visit

Every child needs to see the doctor as they grow. Infants and young children need to stick to a strict checkup schedule to be sure they develop well. Then, kids need to see their doctor every year after they turn 3.

Every checkup is important. Their doctor will check them for different conditions each visit. Your kids will also get immunizations (booster shots). Shots keep them from catching serious diseases. Before they start school, many schools will check to be sure your child is up-to-date with shots.

Your child will also have the following checked during their well-child visit:

  • Height
  • Weight
  • Sight (eyes)
  • Hearing (ears)
  • Blood pressure
  • Social, personal, language and movement skills
  • Eating habits and nutrition
  • Dental (teeth) health
  • Screening for lead before their second birthday
