First Choice Kids is a free health plan provided by Select Health of South Carolina as part of Healthy Connections Kids. Healthy Connections Kids is a program that is designed to provide health insurance for children whose family earns too much to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford a private health insurance plan.
Eligibility
The South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services determines eligibility for the Healthy Connections/First Choice Kids program. In general, children may qualify for the program if they:
- Are legal U.S. citizens and residents of South Carolina
- Have a Social Security card, or the family agrees to apply for the card
- The family's countable resources (such as cash and money in bank accounts) total $30,000 or less
- Are under 19 years of age
- Don’t have comprehensive health coverage
- Have been uninsured for three months unless their health coverage was involuntarily dropped
In addition, the child's family must also meet specific income guidelines.
